Abstract
The types and concentrations of sweeteners in common prescribed liquid and chewable medications for pediatric use were determined by manufacturer survey. The manufacturers were asked by telephone the type and amount of sweeteners in their products. One follow-up letter requested confirmation of the sweetener contents from May 1990 to August 1990. Oral liquid medications were antimicrobials, bronchodilators £¦ antitussives, antihistamines, anticonvulsants, antipyretics and iron containing vitamines. Chewable tablets were antipyretics and iron containing vitamines. Sweetener information on 80 preparations was obtained. Sweeteners were used in most medications and the types and amount of sweeteners were different depend on manufacturers. The most common used sweetener in medications included sucrose, aspartame and sorbitol. For antimicrobial products from different manufacturers had a wide range of sucrose. concentration(0-80£¥). Antihistamines contained 10-78£¥ sucrose. Only one preparation contained saccharin. Acetaminophen and aspirin chewable tablets contained aspartame only(0.4-15§·/tab). Health care practitioners who prescribe or dispense oral liquid or chewable medications should know that products can vary in type and amount of sweeteners.
